About Me

Lawyer, Clinician, Professional

I am a specialist healthcare solicitor with wide experience of conducting clinical negligence litigation and representing clients at Coroner’s Court Inquests. During this time, I have acted for many families bringing medical negligence claims and have successfully recovered millions of pounds in compensation on their behalf.

I also have significant experience of the defendant legal sector, and in providing legal advice for healthcare professionals and organisations – including NHS Trusts, GPs, Doctors, Dentists and Nurses – having represented them in complex medical claims and at Inquests.

Peter is a Freelance Healthcare Lawyer and Managing Director of Inquest Legal Solicitors Ltd.  He started his legal career at one of the world’s largest corporate law firms, Eversheds, completing his training contract, following seats in Shipping & International Law, Commercial, and Health & Clinical Risk.  Peter continued to gain valuable experience of the Defendant ‘Medical Malpractice’’ sector, subsequently working for around 5 years with international firm; DAC Beachcroft as a Senior Solicitor.  At DACB Peter conducted a full case load of clinical negligence litigation matters, representing the NHS Litigation Authority, local NHS Hospitals / Foundation Trusts and, as a member of the Medical Defence Union (MDU) / Dental Defence Union (DDU) team – worked closely with individual doctors, dentists & surgeons on complex claims brought against them – conducting the litigation and advising on all areas of the court process and medical law issues arising.  Whilst at DACB, Peter spent time on secondment with the NHS LA in London and was also the Newcastle Office’s work experience lead. Whilst working as a defendant healthcare lawyer earlier in his career, Peter was also seconded for several weeks, to cover the position of legal services manager at a large NHS Foundation Trust.

Peter has extensive experience of ‘Claimant’ clinical negligence.  He worked for several years at national firm Irwin Mitchell, as a solicitor in their Medical Law & Patients’ Rights Team, dealing with a full case load of complex medical negligence claims, including high value head and neurological injury litigation – involving claims worth in excess of £1m.  Peter also had the opportunity to assist senior lawyers in the team with multi-million-pound Court of Appeal claims, and whilst working at IM, was appointed as Trustee, and subsequently Chairman, of a local, award winning Charity – the Northeast Special Needs Network.  Prior to setting up his own law firm / legal consultancy – Peter worked for niche medical negligence firm Longden Walker & Renney, as an Associate, and later, Director, in one of the largest clinical negligence teams in the North East.  Over the years, Peter has delivered training seminars on medical law and litigation, to many healthcare professionals – from medical and nursing students to senior doctors and NHS managers.  With a particular interest in healthcare inquests, Peter has represented both families, and medical professionals at Coroner’s Court Inquests in the North East including Newcastle, Sunderland, Durham, Middlesbrough and Carlisle Coroner’s Courts.

Before qualifying as a lawyer, Peter worked as a State Registered Paramedic, in the North East and overseas.  As such, he has extensive first-hand experience of NHS frontline care and of delivering advanced trauma life-support in the most diverse of circumstances.  Peter has delivered babies, provided advanced pre-hospital medical care to seriously injured and dying adults & children – including victims of road and industrial accident, housefire, drowning, suicide and murder; he has also received formal recognition for saving life.

At the other end of the spectrum, Peter has worked among royalty and celebrities whilst employed as an Emergency Paramedic for the Sultan of Brunei – providing medical care within an A&E Department and medical cover at the daily, royal polo matches.  Before embarking on his legal career, Peter represented the North East Ambulance Service in a fly-on-the-wall series ‘Rescue Medics’ for Sky television and completed a Health Science Degree.  Reflecting his early interest in clinical risk; Peter’s final dissertation dealt with the optimal delivery of pre-hospital cardiac resuscitation drugs. This led to an immediate service-wide change to the NEAS’ cardiac drug protocol.  Peter believes that his experience of both Claimant and Defendant med-mal litigation, combined with his medical training, enables him to bring considerable balance, insight and expertise to most areas of medical law & practice.

Peter has degrees in both law (LL.B Hons) and health science (BHSc). He is a member of the Law Society, the North of England Medico-Legal Society and a Senior Associate of the Royal Society of Medicine. An FA Licensed Football Coach (FA No. 59675495), Peter currently manages a youth / U-14s football team in his home town: Cramlington United Football Club – a Northumberland County FA’s Charter Standard Community Club of the Year.
